Guide 03: Concrete Walls & Mirror Reflection — Shielding and Multipath Interference
How dense reinforced concrete, silvered mirror backings, and steel beams destroy Wi-Fi packet integrity.
Reinforced concrete (RCC) with steel rebar constitutes a literal Faraday shield against microwave frequencies. Similarly, decorative mirrors contain a microscopic layer of silver or aluminum backing that reflects RF signals rather than letting them pass through.
Understanding Reflection vs. Absorption Coefficients
When electromagnetic waves strike different architectural surfaces, two primary degradations occur:
- Full Absorption: 200mm thick reinforced concrete walls can introduce 25 to 35 dB of attenuation, rendering 5GHz Wi-Fi completely unreadable on the other side.
- Multipath Destructive Interference: Large mirrors and stainless steel kitchen surfaces cause reflected radio waves to arrive out of phase with the direct wave, canceling out packets and triggering high jitter.
TACTICAL MITIGATION:
Ensure the visual line of sight between the router and high-priority workspaces does not pass obliquely through concrete pillars or mirrors. If walls cannot be moved, install an Ethernet backhaul or dedicated wired access point.
