Guide 26: ONU & Modem Thermal Throttling — Preventing Optical Signal Drops
How excessive heat inside Optical Network Terminals causes laser power drops and disconnects.

Fiber Optical Network Terminals (ONUs) convert light pulses from glass fiber cables into electrical Ethernet data. These units run hot. When trapped inside enclosed TV cabinets without airflow, internal optical transceivers thermally throttle, causing random packet drops and speed throttling.
Solution: Keep your ONU elevated in a well-ventilated spot away from direct sunlight, and verify that optical light reception power remains within the healthy -18 dBm to -24 dBm range.
